How to Repair Car Dents and Scratches

Here at Buchanan Auto Park, Inc. of Waynesboro, our body shop can take care of anything from a minor scrape to more extensive body damage, and we service all makes and models. If you’d like to repair a dent or scratch as a DIY project, we can help with that as well. Find out about different types of auto body damage and what you can do to fix them.

How to Fix Scratches

While the crew at the Buchanan CDJR auto body shop can handle scratches or scrapes in your car’s paint, you may want to try and repair the damage yourself. Explore these tips for fixing smaller paint damages:

  • Sandpaper – First, clean the damaged area, then use 2000-grit wet sandpaper until the scratch is nearly invisible. A rubbing compound can then be used to buff out the scratch.
  • Super Glue – If the scratch goes all the way through the paint, you may simply want to seal it before bringing the vehicle to our collision repair shop near Chambersburg. Apply super glue to the scratch to seal the area, which protects it from rust and corrosion.
  • Candle Wax – While this technique won’t fix the scratch, rubbing candle wax into the damaged paint will help prevent corrosion. Be sure to bring your vehicle in quickly, as this isn’t a permanent solution.

DIY Dent Fixes

If you’ve had a fender bender on the streets of Gettysburg, try one of these solutions to remove the dent:

  • Plunger – While we recommend using a specific car dent plunger, a household plunger may do the trick. Simply press it to the dent, creating a tight seal around the affected area, then pull back. This won’t work on dents larger than the plunger head.
  • Dent Puller – While a dent puller might seem like an obvious solution, it requires drilling a hole in the dent, pulling it out, filling the hole, sanding the body filler, and painting it. It’s easier and more convenient to visit Buchanan Auto Body and let our experts handle it.
  • Rubber Mallet – Tap on the inside of the dent to help pop it out. You’ll want to use a rubber mallet so you don’t end up damaging the metal. If you don’t have a rubber mallet, a hammer covered with a towel will work.
